Latin GRAMMY®-nominated Colombian Artist Annasofia Called on KRK Kreate for Debut EP

As an artist, producer, and composer, Colombian native Annasofia has been inspired by music since an early age, taking up drums at seven and writing songs by nine. After studying production at college in Bogotá, she moved to Miami’s vibrant music community to take advantage of a mentorship opportunity with Julio Reyes at Art House Academy. With a musical style that’s described as a combination of rhythmic pop, beat-driven rap, and off-kilter power ballads, Annasofia released her debut EP, “Primer Intento,” on October 2, earning herself a “Best New Artist” nomination at the 2025 Latin GRAMMY® Awards.

From her early days in Colombia to her latest album, one constant has always shaped her sound: KRK Studio Monitors. “The first monitors that I used were KRKs,” she says. “Those ROKIT 5s are still in my studio in Colombia. They helped me make all my first productions, so I have a deep love for KRK.”

When the time came to build a creative setup at her new apartment in Miami, Annasofia selected the KRK Kreate 5 Studio Monitors, which she says felt like reconnecting with an old friend. As a home producer, Annasofia’s setup is in her living room, which she shares with a roommate. “My living room is tiny, so having monitors that don’t take over the whole space is a huge benefit,” she adds. “The Kreate 5s fit right in. Since she is a drummer, Annasofia also checks every mix by how the bass hits in her chest, often comparing her tracks to her favorite Kendrick Lamar tracks for a gut-level reference. Even with no acoustic treatment in her space, the Kreate 5s provide the imaging and balance Annasofia needs to make final tweaks before taking her mix to the studio. “No one listens to my music in a perfectly treated room,” she jokes. “So, working here actually helps me get closer to how people will really hear it.”

Three of the songs on her newest EP were finished using the Kreate 5s, including one produced entirely in her living room. For playback checks, late-night revisions, and the emotional fine-tuning that shapes her storytelling, the Kreates have become part of her daily rhythm.

Even off-stage and out of the studio, KRK is making its mark on Annasofia’s creative process. Before releasing her EP, she took her music to the streets of New York to have strangers listen to her songs and provide their feedback, using her KRK KNS-6402 Headphones to showcase her talents. “It was super cool — I was talking about my music with random people, and many of them asked me about the headphones,” she explains. “They really liked how comfortable they were, and how great they sounded. I loved that experience.”

Beyond monitoring, the Kreates also help provide playback for gatherings and the occasional guilt-tinged moment of using them as home speakers. “They tempt me, but I keep the volume low, so I don’t blast them and bother neighbors,” Annasofia adds.

For Mix Engineer Erik Aldrey, sound has never been just a profession; it’s a lifelong passion. From growing up in Venezuela in a family of working-class musicians to becoming one of the first Venezuelan engineers nominated for a GRAMMY®, Aldrey’s journey has always been defined by the way music makes people feel. Part of creating that feeling, he says, comes from using monitors that translate his mixes into the real world.

“Most people don’t listen on $10,000 speakers; they listen on phones, laptops, Bluetooth speakers, in cars—basically anywhere that’s not a pristine studio environment,” Aldrey explains. “As a result, what we mixers really need are tools that help translate music to all those systems. “When I opened the box, I honestly thought they’d sent me a record or some kind of merch,” Aldrey recalls. “But inside were these tiny speakers, and I remember thinking, ‘Okay, let’s see what these can do.’ I set them up just to test them out and, suddenly, I was mixing full tracks on them without even realizing it. Hours passed, and I was still working on them. That blew my mind because I wasn’t expecting that level of usability and accuracy from something so small and portable.”

At home in his Hollywood, Florida, studio, the GoAux sit just below his main system. “They are always within reach,” he adds. “Sometimes they serve as the first playback system; other times, they’re the final check before sending a mix out.”

For Aldrey, KRK has come full circle. From his early days experimenting with ROKITs to his modern-day reliance on the GoAux for professional, portable mixing. “They’re small, they’re affordable, and they make me work faster,” he says. “At this point in my career, that’s exactly what I need. The gear that sticks with you isn’t always the biggest or most expensive; it’s the stuff that actually makes your job easier and your results better. Malevolence keeps its edge with a decade of ROKIT-powered recording

With early starts in a spare bedroom with a DIY vocal booth, Malevolence’s recording space has grown into a fully outfitted creative space in a 1,000-square-foot former warehouse. Today, this professional studio allows the band to handle pre-production and jam sessions as they prepare for tours and upcoming albums.

“We started out recording our demos in my spare room; that’s where it all began,” recalls guitarist and vocalist Konan Hall. “Now, our professional studio houses a full live room downstairs and a custom-built vocal booth that gives us a professional space tailored to our creative process. It’s a far cry from those early days when all our demos were made in my house on a basic setup.”

While the creative space may have evolved over time, one thing that has remained consistent is Hall’s use of his tried and trusted KRK ROKIT 8 G2 Studio Monitors. Through cramped bedroom sessions, band debates, and long nights of pre-production, the band’s yellow-coned monitors have been a constant.

“I’ve had them nearly 10 years now, bought them secondhand off some kid,” Hall says. “They’re my personal speakers, but have been in our studio forever. Even now, with a professional space and international recognition, Hall hasn’t felt the urge to replace the monitors. “Every time I think about upgrading, I ask myself, ‘Why?’” he continues. “Sure, I’d love to have a sub or maybe a set we could take on tour, but these old ROKITs; they’ve earned their place. When we track something here and later play it in a million-pound studio, it translates. That’s exactly what you want—no surprises.”

The results of the band’s time with the ROKITs can be heard on their newest album, “Where Only The Truth Is Spoken,” which was released June 20. “This album is the truest representation yet of who we are,” adds Hall. “We’re proud of every record we’ve made, but this one… it feels like a massive step up. The production is polished, but it hasn’t lost the raw edge that makes Malevolence, well, Malevolence.”

Of course, Hall says, credit also goes to their producer, Josh Wilbur, whose resume stretches from hardcore acts like Malevolence to pop megastars like Pink. “He flew over from the U.S. and worked with us right here, which was really important,” Hall continues. “Being in our space, surrounded by our own environment, kept us sounding like us. Josh didn’t come in and try to rewrite what Malevolence should sound like; he just helped elevate it.”

That authenticity is built on years of brotherhood. Bassist Charlie Thorpe and Drummer Wilkie Robinson started the band when they were just 11 years old. Hall and fellow guitarist Josh Baines joined in 2009. The lineup was locked in place in 2010, when vocalist Alex Taylor rounded out the team. From Sheffield gigs to European tours, that subsequently stretched across Asia and Australia, the group has steadily carved out its place on the global metal stage. “We’ve pretty much been everywhere now, except South America,” Hall laments. “That’s still on the bucket list.”

Born in Chorwon and based in Seoul,  Minjeong completed her residency program in Korea at the Cheongju Art Studio. Kirklewski is the author of interactive light installations, music videos, generative animations, physical art pieces, and projects in public spaces. From the early days of experimenting with music, Lauro’s journey began by collaborating with local bands, which allowed him to hone his craft. “Over time, one of those artists achieved great success, earning awards both nationally and internationally,” he shares. “Thanks to that experience, I managed to come to the United States and fully immerse myself in the music industry.” Lauro’s career, now flourishing, is rooted in a love for sound that he believes has been amplified by his choice of gear.

Rodriguez Uses KRK ROKITs as Reference Monitors for his Podcast “El Poder de la Música”

MIAMI, JUNE 24, 2024 Podcaster Humberto “El Gato” Rodriguez’s “El Poder de la Música” podcast focuses on all the intricacies of music, from the science behind production to new and emerging artists. His show, which translates to “The Power of Music,” can be found on all major podcasting platforms — such as Apple Music, Spotify, and iHeart Radio.

“El Poder is a reflection of my love for music and the type of musician I would want to be had I become one,” shares Rodriguez. “I started this podcast six years ago with the vision of having a platform to discuss music with musicians, creators, engineers, producers, and anybody else who has anything to do with music, even from a scientific point of view. It has been a real treat to do what I love and be around great music and musicians.”

To bring his podcast to life, Rodriguez knows the gear in his studio needs to be equally as great as the equipment used by the artists he interviews. While there are many features that Rodriguez appreciates about his ROKITs, there are a few that stand out most. “One thing I really love about my KRKs is that the bass is in the front,” he says. “I don’t have a lot of room in my studio, and I needed a sound that was accurate and reliable. If the bass is too close to the back, the sound bounces and isn’t accurate. I love bass, so it was important for me to find a speaker that allows it to sound clean and precise.”

Rodriguez also credits the control functions of the monitors as being among his favored features. “I like the on-board LCD visual EQ,” he adds. “At first, I didn’t know that you could have presets of EQ, but now I love that function because I can keep the speakers flat and use my presets as necessary. I also love the standby feature. If I forget to turn off the speakers, it goes into standby mode and shuts itself down.” 

As someone who prides himself on being genuine, Rodriguez was happy to find a pair of speakers that he trusts. “I am very honest in my personal life and even when I go on air for my radio show or podcast,” he explains. “So, I need real gear and KRK for me is real. There are other well-known brands that might look very cool, but they are not authentic. I like accuracy and an honest sound; the KRK ROKITs are that for me.”

A staple in the pro audio industry for nearly 35 years, Rodriguez started his career working in a recording studio at a radio station in the Dominican Republic, which he credits as the driving force behind his connection to music. Rodriguez studied journalism in Colombia and after moving to the United States, became a well-known on-air personality. He has hosted programs on Spanish-language stations in the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Florida. He continues to follow his passion for music and considers himself a communicator through radio and television.

As a longtime fan of Gibson, Rodriguez has a strong relationship with the brand and KRK.
